Żubroń
The Żubroń is a Polish hybrid between domestic cattle and the European bison, or wisent. It is not a conventional cattle breed in the usual farm sense, but an experimental hybrid developed to combine the size and hardiness of bison with the manageability and production traits of cattle. Work with these hybrids is especially associated with Poland and the Białowieża region. First-generation males are generally sterile, while females may be fertile and can be backcrossed.
Żubroń have been of interest for research, hardy meat production experiments, and questions about bison-cattle genetics, but they are rarely suitable for ordinary livestock ownership. They can be large, powerful, wary animals that require strong fencing, experienced handling, and careful planning around breeding and transport. Legal rules may apply because one parent species is protected wildlife in many places. Modern management is more likely to occur in research herds, specialized reserves, or tightly controlled private collections than on commercial farms. Conservation teams also need to prevent hybrid animals from mixing with pure European bison populations.
