Alexandria
The Alexandria chicken is an Egyptian domestic chicken strain or breed associated with poultry improvement work in the Alexandria and Nile Delta region. It is usually discussed as a production-oriented local line rather than a backyard exhibition breed, and published descriptions can differ according to flock or research source. Birds may show variable farmyard plumage instead of one required color, with selection directed toward eggs, meat, fertility, and survival under Egyptian conditions. It belongs to Gallus gallus domesticus, the same species as all domestic chickens.
In practical flocks, Alexandria chickens are managed much like other locally adapted dual-purpose birds: shade, ventilation, clean water, and balanced feed are especially important in hot climates. Hatcheries or researchers may maintain them as a named line, while smallholders may value them for adaptability more than uniform appearance. Anyone buying birds for breeding should ask about the flock's source and whether it has been crossed with commercial layers or broilers. Maintaining separate breeding pens helps preserve whatever production traits the line was selected to carry.
