Åsbohöna
Åsbohöna is a Swedish landrace chicken from the Åsbo district of northwestern Skåne. Like other Swedish native hens, it was shaped by village and small-farm conditions rather than by a narrow exhibition standard. Flocks can show varied plumage colors, single combs, moderate body size, and a practical farmyard build; uniform color is less important than local adaptation, fertility, and ability to range. The breed is part of Sweden's living poultry heritage and is often discussed within conservation programs for native landrace chickens.
Keepers value Åsbo hens for alert foraging, seasonal hardiness, and hens that may go broody and rear chicks well, although production varies by family. A secure coop is still essential in cold or wet weather, and free-range birds need predator protection because active landrace chickens can wander. Conservation breeding usually means maintaining several unrelated families, avoiding unnecessary outcrossing, and selecting against weakness rather than forcing a show-bird look. Buyers outside Sweden should check whether birds are genuine Åsbohöna stock or simply mixed farm chickens with a similar appearance.
