Augsburger
The Augsburger is a German chicken breed from the Augsburg area of Bavaria, developed in the nineteenth century and often traced to La Fleche ancestry. It is the only traditional chicken breed of Bavarian origin, with a medium body, active carriage, white eggs, and a cup-shaped comb that may look like a small crown. Black is the classic color, showing a clean outline and green sheen when the plumage is in condition.
Augsburgers suit keepers who want a rare European farm breed rather than a modern production hybrid. They can provide household eggs and modest table value, but preservation breeding depends on balancing comb form with vigor, fertility, straight legs, and useful body depth. Dry housing and sensible winter shelter help protect the comb in cold weather. Because the population is limited, breeders should keep pairing records, hatch enough chicks to select honestly, and avoid narrowing their family lines too quickly.
