Barbu de Watermael
The Barbu de Watermael, or Belgian Bearded Watermael bantam, is a very small true bantam developed in the Watermael area of Brussels. It has a compact upright body, clean legs, a full beard and muffs, and a small crest or swept head feathering combined with a fine comb. Many color varieties exist, but the breed's appeal comes as much from its alert expression and neat proportions as from any single plumage pattern.
Watermaels are usually kept for exhibition, specialist breeding, and ornamental backyard flocks. They need the same secure coop as larger chickens, but their size makes them vulnerable to cats, hawks, and gaps in fencing. The beard and head feathering should be kept dry and clear enough for the bird to see, especially in wet climates. Breeding good Watermaels can be demanding because type, head furnishings, color, and vitality all have to be balanced; serious buyers should look for stock from breeders who work to a recognized Belgian bantam standard.
