Black Sex Link
A black sex link is a first-generation hybrid chicken designed so male and female chicks can be separated at hatch by down color or markings. The classic cross uses a non-barred red male, such as a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire, over a barred hen, commonly a Barred Plymouth Rock. Pullets are mostly black and often develop red or gold leakage in the neck and breast, while cockerels show barring or a pale head spot. Hatcheries may sell similar birds under several names, and the exact parent lines can differ.
For keepers, the value is practicality: black sex link hens are reliable brown-egg layers, mature early, and usually suit ordinary backyard or small-farm management. They are not a true-breeding breed, so crossing two black sex links will produce mixed offspring without the same hatch-color sexing. Good feed, calcium, shade in hot weather, and safe housing are important because these hens put considerable energy into egg production. People buying chicks should expect useful layers rather than exhibition birds, and replacement stock normally comes from the original cross.
