Brabanter
The Brabanter is a Dutch crested and bearded chicken associated with the old Brabant region of the Netherlands and Belgium. It is lighter than many ornamental crested breeds, with a narrow forward crest, a three-part beard, small wattles, and a V-shaped comb. Recognized colors include spangled and other varieties, giving the bird a lively, old-European appearance without the heavy crest that blocks vision in some related breeds.
Brabanters are useful for keepers who want a rare ornamental breed that can still forage and lay a modest number of white eggs. Their smaller comb and wattles can be helpful in cold weather, though beards and crests should be kept dry and checked for mites. Breeders need to maintain crest shape, beard fullness, body type, and color while keeping birds active and fertile. In mixed flocks, they often do best with similarly sized, non-aggressive companions.
