Catalana
The Catalana, or Catalana del Prat, is a Spanish chicken from Catalonia, especially the El Prat area near Barcelona. In English-language poultry circles it is often seen as the Buff Catalana, with warm buff plumage, darker tail feathers, a large single comb, and a trim Mediterranean build. It was developed as a useful farm fowl for both eggs and table birds, and it remains a regional heritage breed rather than a high-volume commercial layer.
Catalanas are good candidates for warm-climate range systems because they are active, thrifty, and generally handle heat better than many heavy breeds. They can be less settled in small pens, and the large comb needs protection during hard winter weather. Hens are kept for medium to large white or lightly tinted eggs, while surplus cockerels can provide a modest carcass. Breeding flocks should be selected for vigor, correct buff color, body depth, and steady production, since poor examples may lose the breed's practical farm character.
