Charollaise
The Charollaise is a French chicken breed from the Charolais region of Burgundy, the same countryside associated with Charolais cattle. It is a farm type developed for practical use, especially meat, while still supplying household eggs. Charollaise chickens are generally described as sturdy, white or light-colored birds with a broad body and simple functional feathering rather than ornamental traits. Outside France, they remain uncommon.
For keepers, the Charollaise is best viewed as a regional table fowl that needs more time and space than fast-growing broiler hybrids. Birds benefit from pasture or a roomy run, balanced feed during growth, and housing that keeps heavy-bodied chickens dry underfoot. Anyone sourcing breeding stock should confirm the line and avoid confusing the name with Charolais livestock. Preservation breeding is mostly about maintaining size, vigor, fertility, and the traditional French farm character of the bird.
