Combattant de Bruges
Combattant de Bruges, also called the Bruges Fighter or Brugse Vechter, is a Belgian game chicken from the Bruges area of Flanders. It was developed as a strong, high-stationed fighting type, with a muscular body, upright carriage, hard feathering, and a serious expression. Modern interest is mainly historical, exhibition, and conservation based, since the breed represents a regional gamefowl tradition rather than a general barnyard layer.
Keepers should treat the Combattant de Bruges as an active large fowl that needs secure pens, good footing, and careful male management. It is not the easiest choice for mixed backyard flocks, especially where multiple mature cocks are kept close together. Breeding work usually focuses on preserving the Belgian type, sound legs, correct station, and stable temperament while keeping enough unrelated lines to avoid narrowing a rare population.
