Dandarawi
Dandarawi, also written Dandarawy, is an Egyptian chicken breed associated with Upper Egypt and the area around Dandara. It is a local hot-climate bird rather than a heavy northern farm breed, with selection shaped by village conditions, heat, and modest-input keeping. Descriptions often note an active frame and variable plumage, while its importance comes from regional adaptation and genetic value as much as from show-ring uniformity.
Dandarawi chickens are most relevant to small farms, research flocks, and conservation programs interested in poultry that can cope with dry, warm conditions. They still need shade, water, parasite control, and protection from predators, especially where birds range during the day. Breeding should maintain locally useful traits such as livability, fertility, and natural mothering alongside egg production. Imported lines should be documented carefully because the breed is not common outside its home region.
