Deutsche Zwerghühner
Deutsche Zwerghühner, commonly translated as German Bantams, are true bantam chickens developed in Germany rather than miniatures of one large breed. They are small, active, neatly built birds with a lively outline and a range of recognized color varieties. Their purpose is mainly exhibition, ornamental small-flock keeping, and preservation of a distinct German bantam type.
Because they are true bantams, Deutsche Zwerghühner need management suited to small bodies: safe fencing, predator protection, low-stress handling, and winter housing that avoids drafts without trapping damp air. They can be rewarding layers for their size, but they should not be judged against large utility hens. Breeding programs should keep size, carriage, color, fertility, and sound movement in balance. Crossed bantams may look similar at first glance, so line history matters for serious breeding.
