East Frisian Gull
East Frisian Gull, known in German as Ostfriesische Möwe, is an old North Sea region chicken breed from East Frisia. The name reflects the gull-like impression of its patterned plumage, commonly seen in silver or gold pencilled forms depending on the standard. It is a light, active farm chicken, historically suited to ranging conditions and valued for eggs rather than heavy table weight.
East Frisian Gulls suit keepers who can offer space, secure fencing, and a breeding program that respects their regional identity. They are active birds and may not be as placid as heavy dual-purpose breeds, but that alertness is part of their working history. Selection should protect pencilling, body type, fertility, and laying ability. Because the breed is uncommon, exchanging stock between careful breeders can matter more than chasing a single show-winning trait.
