Ga Dong Tao
Ga Dong Tao, often called Dong Tao chicken, is a Vietnamese breed from Đông Tảo village that is instantly associated with very thick, heavy legs and a substantial body. It has been valued as a specialty meat bird and cultural poultry in Vietnam, where the unusual leg size is part of its identity. The breed is slow and expensive to raise compared with ordinary chickens, and its appearance can be startling to people used to light layers. Color and body details may vary, but the massive legs are the central identifying trait.
Dong Tao chickens require thoughtful management because those heavy legs are not just decorative. Keepers should provide dry, non-slippery footing, low-stress handling, and housing that does not force birds to jump awkwardly from high roosts. Growth, fertility, and leg soundness matter more than pushing birds to extreme size. In climates far from Vietnam, breeders should watch heat, cold, and moisture carefully. Buyers should be cautious of ordinary large-legged crosses sold under the name; true breeding stock should come with clear origin, parent photos, and realistic expectations about cost and growth rate.
