Gai Puen Muang
Gai Puen Muang, often transliterated from Thai as kai phuen mueang, means native or local chicken rather than a tightly standardized breed. It refers to the village chickens of Thailand: small to medium farm fowl with mixed plumage, active foraging habits and strong adaptation to hot, humid rural conditions. Hens may brood and rear chicks, and the birds are commonly valued for household meat, eggs and the firmer texture of slow-grown native chicken.
These chickens fit semi-free-range systems better than intensive confinement. A secure night coop, predator control and simple supplements of grain, protein and minerals improve survival and growth when scavenging is limited. Parasite control and vaccination may matter in larger flocks, particularly where Newcastle disease is a risk. Breeding programs should recognize that Gai Puen Muang is a landrace category; selection for faster growth or better laying can be useful, but heavy crossing with commercial stock may dilute local resilience.
