Galiña de Mos
Galiña de Mos is a Galician chicken breed from northwestern Spain, named for the parish of San Xiao de Mos in Lugo. Also called the Mos hen, it is a large dual-purpose farm fowl with a deep body, clean yellow legs, single comb and warm buff to reddish-wheaten plumage with darker markings in the tail and neck. It was developed from local Galician stock and later became a focus of regional breed recovery after numbers fell during the rise of commercial poultry hybrids.
The breed suits outdoor and small-farm systems where slower growth is acceptable in exchange for hardy birds and flavorful carcasses. Hens lay useful brown or tinted eggs but are not meant to compete with industrial layers. In Galicia, conservation flocks and breeder associations place weight on the traditional color, body size and rustic character, so crossing for quick gains can undermine the type. Housing should handle damp Atlantic weather with good ventilation, dry litter and ground that does not stay muddy.
