Gâtinaise
The Gâtinaise is a French chicken from the Gâtinais region, traditionally associated with white plumage, a red comb, and a practical dual-purpose build. It was developed as a farm bird for eggs and meat, and it has been promoted in preservation efforts as part of France's regional poultry heritage. The breed is not as globally familiar as Leghorns or Sussex, but it has a clear local identity: a white French utility chicken shaped for ordinary farm production rather than ornamental novelty.
Keepers usually choose Gâtinaise chickens for heritage production, regional interest, or small-farm meat and egg use. They need normal poultry basics: dry shelter, clean water, balanced feed, secure outdoor access, and selection for healthy growth. White plumage makes dirt and feather damage easy to see, so show or breeding birds benefit from clean pens and careful handling before exhibition. Buyers should look for active birds with sound legs, good body depth, and known source. Conservation flocks should balance appearance with fertility and laying so the breed remains useful.
