Gerze
The Gerze is a Turkish chicken breed associated with the Gerze district on the Black Sea coast. It is usually described as a local black chicken, valued as part of Turkey's native poultry resources. The breed's regional setting matters: coastal northern Turkey has different pressures from hot inland poultry areas, and local chickens were historically selected for household use, adaptation, and survival more than for standardized show traits. Gerze chickens are therefore important as genetic and cultural stock, not just as another black fowl.
People keeping Gerze chickens should pay attention to source and conservation value. A genuine line should have traceable origin or at least a clear breeder history, because black plumage alone is not enough for identification. Management can follow normal village-chicken practice with secure night housing, outdoor access, and selection for health, fertility, and useful eggs. Breeders may be interested in maintaining regional Turkish genetics, so matings should be planned to avoid unnecessary crossing. Photographs, hatch records, and notes on temperament and production help future keepers understand the line.
