Ghagus
Ghagus is an Indian chicken breed associated with native poultry kept in parts of southern India, especially Karnataka and neighboring areas. It is generally treated as a hardy desi-type breed rather than a standardized commercial strain. Ghagus birds may show game-like alertness, strong legs, and variable plumage, with selection historically shaped by village conditions, scavenging ability, and household production. The breed is useful to discuss alongside India's other indigenous chickens because it represents local adaptation rather than imported industrial genetics.
For smallholders, Ghagus-type chickens can be valued for resilience, foraging, and survival under lower-input systems. They may not match commercial layers for egg numbers or broilers for growth, but they can fit mixed rural flocks where climate tolerance and mothering ability matter. Breeders should select from healthy, active birds with known local origin and avoid diluting the line with unrelated crosses if conservation is the goal. In more intensive backyard settings, provide secure night housing, clean feed supplements, and predator protection while preserving the active behavior that makes native breeds useful.
