Groninger Meeuw
The Groninger Meeuw is a Dutch chicken from the northern Netherlands, with its name often translated as Groningen gull. It belongs to the group of light, active landrace-style fowl once kept around coastal and rural farms for eggs and self-sufficient flock reproduction. The breed is especially associated with penciled plumage, a trim build, and an alert carriage. Its appearance is refined enough for exhibition, but the foundation is a practical farm chicken shaped by northern European conditions.
Groninger Meeuw chickens suit keepers who can give them space, because they are active foragers and can be more lively than heavy dual-purpose breeds. They are usually kept for eggs, breed conservation, and show breeding rather than meat yield. Preservation work should pay attention to correct penciling, size, and vigor, since rare regional breeds can lose usefulness when selection narrows too much around color alone.
