Gushi
The Gushi chicken is a Chinese indigenous breed associated with Gushi County in Henan. It is known as a dual-purpose local chicken, valued for eggs, meat quality, and adaptation to the mixed farming systems of central China. Gushi birds are usually described as moderate, hardy, and variable enough to reflect their landrace background, rather than tightly uniform in the way commercial hybrids are. The breed has also been important as a genetic resource in Chinese poultry research and conservation.
Smallholders and conservation breeders keep Gushi chickens for practical production and local identity. They benefit from room to forage, but laying and growth improve when birds receive steady supplemental feed and safe housing. Breeding programs should avoid selecting only for appearance; fertility, survival, egg production, and meat traits are part of the breed's usefulness. Clear flock records help separate genuine Gushi lines from general mixed village chickens.
