Haidong
Haidong is a Chinese regional chicken associated with Haidong in Qinghai, on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Chickens from this area are shaped by altitude, dry conditions, and colder seasonal weather than many southern Chinese breeds face. The breed is usually treated as a local dual-purpose genetic resource, with value in adaptation as much as in any single plumage color. Birds may be moderate in size, active, and suited to smallholder systems where resilience matters.
Owners keeping Haidong chickens should plan for secure, draft-protected housing in cold weather while still allowing movement and daylight. Feed quality is important because highland or dry-region birds cannot produce well on sparse forage alone. Conservation flocks should select for hardiness, fertility, and sound body condition, and should record stock origin carefully. The breed's regional adaptation is its central asset, so casual crossing can erase what makes it useful.
