Hedemorahöna
Hedemorahona, often called the Hedemora chicken in English, is a Swedish landrace from the Hedemora area of Dalarna. It is associated with cold tolerance, dense feathering, and the variation expected in a traditional farmyard population. Birds may show different colors, comb forms, and feather details, but they should retain the sturdy character of a northern homestead chicken. The breed's identity rests on adaptation to harsh winters and small-farm usefulness more than on a single show color.
For owners in cold climates, Hedemorahona chickens can be appealing because they were shaped where shelter, hardiness, and foraging ability mattered. They still need dry housing, good ventilation, unfrozen water, and enough feed through winter. Breeders should keep landrace diversity while avoiding careless outcrossing, since too much uniformity can weaken the genetic breadth that makes the breed valuable. Records of family lines help conservation flocks manage that balance and prevent the name from becoming a label for any northern-looking mixed flock.
