Herve
Herve is a Belgian chicken associated with the Pays de Herve in Wallonia, a landscape of orchards, pasture, and small farms. It is an old regional fowl rather than a common modern production breed, and it is usually valued for heritage, local identity, and practical dual-purpose qualities. Like many Belgian village breeds, it reflects a time when farm chickens needed to lay, reproduce, forage, and provide meat without specialized industrial management. The breed is now most relevant to conservation and small-flock enthusiasts.
A useful Herve flock depends on the old farm basics: dry housing, safe outdoor access, good feed, and close attention to parasites in wet weather. Type and vigor need to be protected together, especially if available stock is limited. Local or national poultry clubs may define the details differently, so show birds should be compared with the standard used in their region. For farm use, health and fertility remain the first tests.
