Hollandse Kuifhoen
The Hollandse Kuifhoen is the Dutch crested chicken, a long-established ornamental breed centered on a large head crest. Many people recognize the black-bodied, white-crested form, though other colors and related crested types exist depending on country and registry. The bird's appeal is visual, with a rounded crest, upright bearing, and refined body. It is not the same as an ordinary layer with a few extra head feathers; the crest is the defining breed feature.
Crested chickens need management that accounts for limited vision and feather hygiene. Owners should keep housing dry, protect birds from bullying, and trim or manage crest feathers when welfare requires it, especially in wet or muddy conditions. Breeders should select for a full crest without skull, eye, or balance problems. Show breeders also need to understand the local standard, because names and accepted varieties can differ across Dutch, British, and American usage. Buyers should look for birds that can see, eat, and move comfortably.
