Houdan
The Houdan is a French chicken from the area around Houdan, west of Paris, and is one of the best-known crested French breeds. It is traditionally a dual-purpose fowl, with a rounded crest, beard and muffs, mottled plumage in the classic variety, and five toes. The combination of crest, facial feathering, and extra toe makes it easy to distinguish from plain farm breeds. Historically it supplied both eggs and table birds, especially before modern commercial strains replaced many local French chickens.
Houdans can be productive and personable, but the crest and beard need practical management. Owners should keep litter dry, prevent mud from matting facial feathers, and watch for reduced vision or pecking around the crest. Breeders should select for correct five-toed structure, sound body, good fertility, and clear mottling where that variety is kept. The breed works best in flocks where ornamental traits are balanced with health and utility.
