Hrvatica
Hrvatica, the Croatian hen, is a native Croatian chicken developed in village and farm settings for eggs, meat, and resilience. It is usually described as a hardy, active bird suited to free-range or semi-intensive keeping, with color varieties that may include red, black, partridge-like, or other locally recognized forms. The breed is part of Croatia's domestic animal heritage, valued less for industrial output than for adaptation, fertility, and usefulness in family-scale poultry systems.
Hrvatica chickens earn their keep when they can forage, roost safely, and receive consistent feed through laying season and winter. The breed suits small farms looking for a regional dual-purpose bird, but it still needs ordinary poultry health care and predator protection. Breeding flocks should maintain recognized color types, body shape, and performance without uncontrolled crossing to imported hybrids. Local records and breed society guidance help keep the Croatian identity clear.
