Hua-Tung
Hua-Tung chickens are associated with eastern Taiwan, especially the Hualien and Taitung region that gives the name its meaning. They are part of Taiwan's local poultry diversity, shaped by village keeping, warm humid conditions, and regional table-bird preferences. Hua-Tung chickens are generally understood as native or locally adapted birds rather than standardized global exhibition fowl. Their value is in hardiness, local identity, and suitability for smaller production systems.
Farmers and small-flock keepers should manage Hua-Tung chickens with shade, ventilation, secure housing, and enough feed to support growth beyond what ranging provides. In humid climates, parasite control and dry resting areas matter. Breeders should document source lines and select for vigor, fertility, and the traits expected in their regional stock. Buyers should avoid assuming every Taiwanese local chicken is Hua-Tung; the name should point to a maintained line or credible source.
