Jianghan
The Jianghan chicken is a Chinese local breed associated with the Jianghan Plain, a lowland region around Hubei where village poultry had to suit humid seasons, mixed farming, and household production. It is generally understood as a practical native chicken rather than an ornamental breed. Birds from such regional populations are valued for adaptation, usable meat, and egg production under smallholder conditions, with appearance often less uniform than in show-centered breeds.
Jianghan chickens are most meaningful when kept as a locally adapted flock. They need dry night housing, protection from summer heat and damp ground, and steady feed to support both laying and growth. Breeders should select for livability, fertility, body condition, and any traits recognized in the maintained line instead of chasing a single color. For farms outside the original region, the key question is whether the birds still show the hardiness and production balance that made the type useful. Good records help prevent a regional breed from becoming a loose mixed label.
