Lakenvelder
The Lakenvelder is a Dutch and German chicken breed recognized by its clean black-and-white arrangement. The name is often interpreted as a dark shadow over a pale field, matching the black head, neck, and tail set against a white body. It is a light, active breed with a neat outline, white eggs, and deep roots in northwestern Europe's borderland poultry traditions.
Lakenvelders fit keepers who want alert foragers and a visually crisp flock, but they are rarely the calmest choice for tiny yards. Secure fencing, outdoor space, and patient handling help this quick breed settle. Breeders must work carefully on contrast because a clean pattern is harder to keep than it first appears. Egg production can serve a heritage flock, though not at commercial-layer levels. Strong lines balance markings, vigor, fertility, and steady laying.
