Limousine (Coq de Pêche)
The Limousine, also called Coq de Peche, is a French chicken from the Limousin region whose roosters produce hackle feathers used by fly tiers. The fishing connection is central to the breed: neck feathers are selected for texture, shape, and usefulness in artificial flies, while the birds also belong to France's broader tradition of regional farm poultry. Feather quality matters more here than simple barnyard color.
Keepers of Limousine chickens manage them as heritage poultry and as a feather-producing line. Roosters should be healthy, well fed, and protected from broken or dirty hackles, since damaged feathers lose value. Breeders should select for regional type, sound bodies, fertility, and the feather traits tiers want, while maintaining enough hens to keep the line strong. Buyers should ask whether a flock is selected for fly tying, exhibition, or ordinary farm use, because those goals can produce different birds.
