Lohmann Brown
The Lohmann Brown is a commercial brown-egg layer developed for dependable egg production in managed flocks. It is a hybrid layer rather than a heritage breed, so chicks from the same pen do not breed back true in the way a closed standard breed would. Hens are usually medium sized, reddish brown to brown with lighter hackles, and selected for early maturity, feed efficiency, and high output of brown-shelled eggs.
Small flock keepers value Lohmann Browns for steady laying and calm, workmanlike temperaments, but they should be managed as production hens. They need balanced layer feed, enough calcium, dry litter, and protection from heat stress as well as predators. Breeding decisions are different from heritage poultry: replacing the same type normally means buying from the breeding company or hatchery supply chain, while home-hatched offspring may be useful chickens but not true Lohmann Browns.
