Maatiaiskana
Maatiaiskana means Finnish landrace chicken, a group of old farm chicken lines preserved in Finland rather than a single color-defined breed. These birds were shaped by northern homesteads, seasonal weather, and modest farm resources. Different strains may show different plumage and body details, but they share the value of being locally adapted, naturally reproducing chickens with a long connection to Finnish rural life.
The main responsibility with Maatiaiskana is strain preservation. Keepers should know which line they have, avoid casual mixing between unrelated landrace strains, and choose breeders for health, fertility, winter hardiness, and useful laying rather than for novelty colors alone. They do well in small farm settings with dry, draft-free housing, outdoor access when weather allows, and steady feed through the dark season. Records of matings and hatch results help maintain the population's integrity.
