Matrouh
Matrouh is an Egyptian chicken strain associated with the Matrouh region on the Mediterranean coast. It appears in lists of locally developed Egyptian poultry alongside Fayoumi, Dandarawi, Mandarah, and Montazah strains. The name is best understood in a practical farm and research context, where selection has generally aimed at survival, laying, and household meat use in hot, semi-arid smallholder conditions.
Appearance and performance can depend heavily on the source flock, so buyers should ask about parent stock, adult size, egg numbers, and whether the birds have been kept as a closed strain. Matrouh chickens still need the basics of good poultry management: shade, ventilation, clean water, predator-safe night housing, and a ration with enough protein for growth and laying. For conservation or research flocks, avoiding unplanned crossing is more important than chasing exhibition-style uniformity.
