Mecseki Zengő Chicken
The Mecseki Zengő chicken is a Hungarian regional or locally developed poultry type named for the Mecsek hills and Zengő, their highest summit in southern Hungary. It is not a common international exhibition breed, and English-language documentation is sparse, so the name is best treated as a local strain or conservation flock label unless a breeder provides a specific standard. Birds are generally discussed in the context of hardy village chickens for eggs and household meat.
For keepers outside its home region, provenance matters more than a simple breed name. Ask about adult size, laying performance, temperament, color expectations, and whether the birds come from a maintained line. Management should follow sound heritage-chicken practice: secure housing at night, outdoor access where predators can be controlled, and feed that supports both foraging and steady egg production. If regional identity is the goal, small breeding groups should avoid indiscriminate crossing with commercial hybrids.
