Meusienne
Meusienne is a French chicken associated with the Meuse department in Lorraine, a northeastern region with a long tradition of farm poultry. It is generally described as a modern or reconstructed local breed, selected for utility rather than for an extreme ornamental feature. The birds are medium to large, broad in body, and intended as a dual-purpose fowl for eggs and table use. Because it is much less common than Marans, Faverolles, or Bresse-type chickens, details such as color and exact type may be tied to the standard followed by French breed clubs.
Small farms and preservation flocks keep the Meusienne as a regional genetic resource and a practical backyard chicken. It does best with dry housing, room to move, and a balanced ration; muddy yards can spoil condition before shows. Chicks are usually sourced through specialist breeders, so buyers should ask about strain, breeding goals, and whether birds are being selected for both vigor and recognizable Meuse type.
