Mikawa
Mikawa is a Japanese chicken named for the old Mikawa province, part of present-day Aichi Prefecture. It is one of the lesser-known regional fowl listed by poultry conservation sources, separate from the better-known Nagoya chicken also associated with Aichi. Published information in English is thin, so it is safest to regard Mikawa as a local Japanese breed or strain maintained for traditional type and genetic diversity rather than a widely standardized international exhibition chicken. Birds are generally discussed as practical native fowl, not as long-tailed ornamentals or modern hybrid layers.
Keepers who encounter Mikawa stock are usually working within small breeding networks, cultural collections, or research flocks. Management is ordinary for active chickens: secure housing at night, outdoor space when possible, and selection for vigor as well as correct regional identity. Because rare Japanese breeds can be confused in translation or crossed into local meat programs, anyone buying hatching eggs or breeding birds should confirm the source and the standard being used.
