Mrityunjay
Mrityunjay is an Indian improved backyard chicken strain developed for low-input rural poultry systems. The name is associated with survival and hardiness, and the birds are generally promoted as colored dual-purpose chickens for village eggs and meat rather than as an exhibition breed. Like other Indian rural varieties, they may include mixed or synthetic ancestry chosen for better growth, livability, and scavenging ability under household conditions. Plumage and exact performance can vary by source.
A Mrityunjay flock still needs secure night shelter, clean water, and protection from predators. Vaccination programs and supplemental feed are usually guided by local extension workers, especially during laying, brooding, or dry seasons. They are useful for small farms that rely partly on ranging, but chicks need brooding care just as commercial breeds do. Buyers should ask the hatchery or extension source how the line is maintained, since the name may not be recognized by international poultry registries.
