Noire du Berry
The Noire du Berry is a black French chicken from the Berry region of central France, traditionally kept as a practical farm bird for meat and eggs. It is a medium to fairly large domestic chicken with glossy black feathering, a red single comb, dark legs in many lines, and a broad utility body. Like several regional French breeds, its modern population reflects both older farm stock and later conservation work after numbers fell. The breed is often described by its color, but its identity also rests on body type, regional origin, and usefulness in small-scale poultry yards.
Noire du Berry chickens suit free-range or semi-free-range systems where they can forage while still receiving a balanced ration for laying and growth. They are not meant to compete with hybrid layers or fast broilers; their value is steadier household production, carcass quality, and preservation of a local genetic resource. Breeding pens should avoid close inbreeding and should keep the black plumage, size, and sound conformation consistent. Anyone buying chicks should check whether the seller is working with recognized Berry lines or simply offering black farm crosses.
