North Holland Blue
The North Holland Blue, called the Noord-Hollandse Blauwe in Dutch, is a heavy utility chicken developed in the Netherlands for meat and eggs. Its name can mislead newcomers: the traditional color is a soft blue-grey barred or cuckoo pattern rather than the simple blue gene seen in some other breeds. The breed was built from North Holland farm fowl with influence from large table breeds such as the Malines, and it was selected for a broad body, calm disposition, and good growth before modern broiler lines replaced older market chickens.
In a small flock, North Holland Blues are usually kept as dual-purpose birds with an emphasis on table quality and decent brown-egg production. Their size calls for solid housing, generous pop-hole access, and perches that are not set too high for heavy adults. They are generally manageable on pasture, though rich feed is useful when growing cockerels for the table. Breeders should preserve the cuckoo-blue appearance, width, and vigor, and buyers should confirm that stock is true North Holland Blue rather than a generic blue or barred farm cross.
