Oravka
Oravka is a Slovak dual-purpose chicken developed for the Orava region, a cold mountain area in northern Slovakia. The breed was created in the twentieth century from local hardy chickens with influence from production breeds such as Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire, Wyandotte and Plymouth Rock. Oravkas are medium to large, clean-legged birds with yellow skin and a practical farm build rather than exaggerated show features. The golden brown or yellow-brown coloration most associated with the breed gives flocks a warm, uniform appearance.
On small farms, Oravkas are valued for balanced egg and meat use, winter tolerance and ability to forage when weather permits. They still need a dry coop, unfrozen water and shade during hot spells, since mountain hardiness does not remove basic poultry needs. The breed is uncommon outside Slovakia and neighboring countries, so breeding stock may come from small conservation or hobby flocks. Selection typically emphasizes vigor, fertility, good egg size and the ability to maintain type without narrowing the gene pool too far.
