Pedresa
Pedresa is a barred native chicken associated especially with northern Spain, including Cantabrian and nearby farm traditions depending on the source. The name refers to the stone-gray, barred appearance that gives the birds a mottled look. It is a rustic dual-purpose type, valued for local adaptation, foraging ability, and the preservation of old regional poultry rather than for the extreme production of a modern hybrid.
For owners, Pedresa chickens are usually straightforward range birds if given secure housing and sensible feed. The challenge is maintaining true breeding stock, because barred barnyard chickens can look similar at a glance. Breeders should document origin, select for the expected body type and feather pattern, and keep enough breeding birds to protect genetic diversity. In small flocks, watch for leg health, fertility, and laying persistence rather than choosing only the boldest markings.
