Pekin Bantam
The Pekin Bantam is a rounded, feather-legged bantam with a compact body, full cushion, short stance, and soft expression. In many countries it is treated as a true bantam rather than a miniature of a large fowl, though naming traditions vary by registry. It is an exhibition and hobby breed with many accepted colors, from solid shades to patterned varieties, and a temperament many keepers find easy to handle.
Care for Pekin Bantams should account for their low carriage and heavy foot feathering. Dry bedding, clean run surfaces, and regular checks for mud balls, mites, and broken feathers matter more than they do in clean-legged birds. They do not require a large farmyard, but they do need secure pens and protection from rough larger chickens. Breeding programs should balance show type with fertility, hatchability, leg soundness, and hens that can brood without losing condition.
