Penedesenca
The Penedesenca is a Catalan chicken from the Penedès region of Spain, treasured by many keepers for very dark brown eggs. It has a carnation or king comb with several points that create a crown-like form, plus active Mediterranean body type. Varieties include black, wheaten, partridge, and other regional colors, and the birds are usually alert foragers rather than heavy, slow-moving chickens.
Penedesencas suit keepers who want dark eggs from a lighter free-range bird, but they are often more independent than cuddly. Secure range, good fencing, and calm handling from a young age are useful. Breeders should record egg color by hen because darkness varies and can fade without selection. The unusual comb needs attention in freezing weather, where frostbite can occur. Good flocks balance egg color, type, fertility, vigor, and practical hardiness.
