Pfälzer Kämpfer
The Pfälzer Kämpfer, or Palatinate Fighter, is a German game chicken breed from the Pfalz region. It belongs to the European gamefowl tradition, with a muscular body, alert carriage, and selection history tied to fighting-type poultry rather than commercial egg output. Modern breeding focuses on preserving type, athletic structure, and historical character within exhibition and conservation settings.
Pfälzer Kämpfer chickens require careful flock management because game-type males may be assertive and should not be crowded. Secure pens, good leg footing, and separation between mature males help prevent injuries. Breeders should select for sound bodies, fertility, stable temperament, and the details required by the standard, not just a combative look. As with other rare regional breeds, reliable source records are important because a generic game cross is not the same thing as a maintained Palatinate line.
