Piao
Piao chickens are a Chinese indigenous chicken breed or landrace most often associated with Yunnan. They have a rumpless or very short-tailed body shape caused by reduced tail vertebrae, giving the rear of the bird a rounded outline unlike ordinary village chickens. Flocks described under the Piao name may differ in color and size, but they are generally local-purpose birds valued for meat, household eggs, and adaptation to village conditions rather than commercial uniformity.
Because Piao chickens are uncommon outside their source regions, serious keepers usually treat them as conservation poultry. Verified breeding stock matters, especially when the tailless form is the main trait being preserved. They are managed much like other resilient village chickens, with secure night housing, forage when available, and balanced feed. Breeding pens may need extra attention to fertility and mating condition because rumpless body shape can affect reproduction in some birds.
