Pitiüsa
The Pitiüsa chicken, or gallina Pitiüsa, is a native poultry type of Ibiza and Formentera, the Pityusic Islands within Spain's Balearic archipelago. It is a Mediterranean village fowl, active and light to medium in build, shaped by smallholding conditions rather than intensive production. Color and show details may differ among local lines, but the breed is usually discussed as part of Spain's native poultry conservation resources and is much less common internationally than the Minorca or commercial brown layers.
In practical flocks, Pitiüsa chickens are valued for foraging ability, heat tolerance, and modest household production. Island-adapted birds still need shade, clean water, predator-safe housing, and protection from overcrowding during hot weather. Anyone buying them for breeding should look for documented stock and avoid mixing them loosely with other Balearic chickens, since small populations can lose their identity quickly.
