Preta Lusitânica
The Preta Lusitânica is a Portuguese native chicken breed whose name means Lusitanian Black. It is one of Portugal's traditional chicken resources, recognized for black plumage and a farmyard role in eggs, meat, and local adaptation. The breed carries cultural as well as practical value, since native chickens often preserve traits lost in highly specialized commercial lines.
Preta Lusitânica chickens are suitable for keepers who want hardy dual-purpose birds and are willing to help maintain a defined native breed. They do well with outdoor access, secure roosting, and ordinary layer or breeder feed. Breeders should select for the expected black color, sound bodies, fertility, and livability, while keeping clear records so the breed is not confused with generic black backyard chickens. Conservation flocks should balance type with enough unrelated breeding stock.
