Rugao Yellow
Rugao Yellow is a Chinese indigenous chicken associated with Rugao in Jiangsu Province. It is part of the broad yellow-feathered poultry tradition of eastern China, where birds with golden or buff plumage, yellow beaks, and yellow shanks have long been valued for household eggs and flavorful meat. Compared with white commercial broilers, Rugao Yellow chickens are generally slower growing, more active, and shaped by local farm selection rather than by a single industrial breeding formula.
The breed is most often relevant to smallholder production, regional food culture, and conservation of Chinese poultry genetic resources. It can work in semi-intensive or free-range systems if birds have shelter from damp weather, secure roosting, and a ration that supports steady growth without forcing broiler-like weight gain. Breeders select for the yellow appearance, sound legs, fertility, and laying ability. Buyers should be aware that yellow-feathered commercial chickens are common in China and overseas; the Rugao Yellow name should come with a clear source or breeding history.
