Saipan Jungle Fowl
Saipan jungle fowl are a tall, game-type domestic chicken associated with Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, although their exact ancestry is uncertain and they are not wild junglefowl. Birds usually stand high on long legs, with a muscular body, strong beak, relatively tight feathering, and an upright, alert carriage. Roosters can be very large compared with ordinary backyard layers, while hens are lighter and lay modest numbers of tinted eggs. Most flocks are kept as heritage, exhibition, or gamefowl-type birds rather than as a commercial utility breed.
Management suits experienced chicken keepers who can provide space, sturdy fencing, and separation of mature males when temperament demands it. The breed is slow to mature, so breeding stock is normally judged after growth is complete rather than from early size alone. Chicks benefit from steady nutrition and dry footing, and adults often do best in roomy pens where their height and leg length are not cramped. Buyers should ask whether a line is being maintained as Saipan type or merely sold under the name, because standardization varies.
